picked up to see if I could fix it. Upon a visual inspection of the board, a few capacitors looked pretty bad. The only one that tested bad was the one I have a screwdriver pointing to in the first thing I think of when color is out, is the main color transistors. And what do you know, Red and Green were shorted! Took a minute but I found some replacement transistors on eBay, and got them in, and Boom! All colors! There was one more problem though, I couldn't get it to display anything, even though I had all colors (the screen was white).

If I gave the monitor input when only blue worked, the monitor worked, and the input showed up...so what was going on!? The way this monitor works is there is a harness for hooking up where the blue goes into the board, same with red and green. To make sure there were no problems before the harness I took the red harness and put it into the blue gun connector, and it worked, so that told me everything before that is likely working. I did the same with green and it also worked, but if I plugged blue or green into the red gun connector, the screen would fritz out, and nothing displayed. This told me there was a problem between that red connector and the red gun. If this doesn't make sense feel free to ask me questions...but anyway, I found a shorted component in that pathway, and replaced it. After replacing it (circled in a photo) and connecting all harnesses to where they're supposed to go, everything worked perfectly!

One of the potentiometer dial/caps was missing, know, but tv tubes have a range of light to dark tint on them. JVC tubes are typically darker tint, and the commodore tubes are very light tint. The tint is said to help contrast, and allow black colors to look even more black.

So, what happens when you find a tube that has no tint at all like this one!? The colors look insanely vibrant! Sure the contrast of the that's on the tube you swap in doesn't always work so you need to swap the old yoke onto the new tube sometimes, and that's what I had to do here. When you do that it can be very challenging, almost impossible to get the convergence perfect. The convergence is great, but it's not perfect, I tried to take some photos where it's not perfect.

I was trying a new style of lower when hooking it up. In the video I say the kit includes wire, but it DOES NOT. On one end of the board you go to the ground and the negative source on the flyback (between -100 and -250v), on the other end of the board you go to ground and the G1 pin(s) on the neckboard.

You will need to isolate the G1 pin(s) on the neckboard from everything else. This means either scraping away the trace, or clipping the leg of component so there is no continuity between the G1 pin(s) and anything else.

It's as easy as that, improve your crt sharpness in a matter of minutes!

Some crt's have more than one G1 pin on the neckboard. I've seen this on Sony's more than anything else. In those cases, you would have to isolate each of the G1's, and run your wire to each of the pins on the neckboard. I've seen cases of two G1 pins, and other cases of three G1 pins. They may be each labeled as G1, or maybe G1-1, G1-2. In any case you need to run a wire to each of them. You can run separate wires from the pad on the mod board, or you can run one wire, and split it. Either way works!

Once everything is all setup, and you turn on your tv for the first time you will likely need to turn the G2 pot on the flyback up to get your screen back to where it was. You will find a balance of turning G2 pot up, and G1 pot on the board to where you're happy. If you turn the G1 pot all the way up you will find the electron beam the most focused, but that's not necessarily what always looks best. Play around with it and see what you like.

Feel free to reach out if you need any help, and I'll do my best!

If you're not using an oscilloscope to locate which flyback pin you use, you do not want to use the ground pin, or the pin which connects to the Horizontal Output Transistor. It would be wise to review the service manual of the crt you're looking at to avoid using the Horizontal Output Transistor connected flyback pin as a "test point", because it can output higher voltage than the G1 board can tolerate.

It's normal for the potentiometer on the board to feel warm!

Everything on this board was sourced from legitimate places, Mouser, Digikey etc. using the highest quality pieces.

Special thanks to Luke Simon for all the help you've given in creating the G1 Mod.

Here's another tutorial which may help in the installation process:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JnT7qBUdbVkzPTlVRB5mot-R5UvbFSSe/view

Credit to DreamCRT & Dave Astur from Telegram #Teles de Tubo for the Google Drive tutorial. Thank you!!

I'm sure you've heard the Commodore 1702, or the Commodore 1084. Commodore is very well known for making some of the highest quality monitors, especially for the time. We're talking about the 80's! And out of the many different monitors they released, I think many people would say that the 1950 is the best Commodore monitor of them all!

Why's that!? Well we're talking about a super high quality, .31 dot pitch monitor, the equivalent to about 600 tvl in a 13" size. But not only does it use very high quality tube, this monitor has a scan range of 15khz to 37khz. That means that you can send 240p content to this, as well as 480p, and it will handle it just fine! That's extremely rare for a monitor. And would you know what? Commodore actually made a couple other multiformat monitors, but this is the only one that supports H/V sync, as well as composite sync. That just makes its a heck of a lot more user friendly when trying to connect to many different sources.

I did open this up and inspect it thoroughly. I did replace/upgrade a few capacitors that are recommended to replace on the neckboard as well.

One thing to note is these 1950's don't quite fill the entire screen horizontally when in 240p. It's not a problem, it's just the way they were made. There is a horizontal width adjustment coil inside, and I adjusted it all the way, to make it fill the screen as much as possible. When in 480p mode, it fills the entire screen. You have a large range of adjustment vertically, so getting the correct aspect ratio is easy with a turn of the pot.

Check out the to RGB mod it.

Some RGB mods just don't turn out as nice as others, and this is an example of that. Once RGB modded you cannot adjust the contrast or the brightness, and the contrast is a little bit too high. I tried adjusting resistor values all day long, but I couldn't get it to look any better. Every once in a while I can see a little bit of interference coming through on the RGB lines too. I tried adding diodes to all the lines, but I just couldn't quite solve this interference. It's hardly noticeable, and it's only an RGB thing, if you have the tv in composite mode, it works properly as it should. There's a switch on the back to put it in RGB mode, or flip it off, to turn RGB off to put it in Composite/stock mode.

The linearity on this set is great, by that I mean as you see objects move across the screen they don't bulge or bubble they stay the same size, but the horizontal vibrant, it just isn't as sharp as I would like it because the contrast is too high in RGB mode. When contrast is up too high, things start to get less sharp, and bloom a little bit more. You can still adjust contrast/brightness and all the normal settings in composite mode, if you choose to do so.

Maybe it would work out well for someone who needs an arcade test bench or something like that. There are recent sold listings on ebay for this set between $70 and $124, so hopefully $75 with the added RGB seems fair, even though the RGB isn't the best RGB mod.

This does come with the original remote too.

What we have here is another exceptional 14" monitor. This uses a very fine slot mask tube, very similar to the one we see in a Commodore 1084. This tube has an "etched glass" and I don't think I've seen that on a 1084. The etched glass is really nice, because it helps diffuse the light that hits it, reducing glare. (I have confirmed the Commodore 1081 and 1084 have been offered with this tube, still not sure if they came with the etched glass though)

Overall, just a beautiful monitor. I would argue 5-600tvl, and for a slot mask that is especially rare. I imagine this whole setup is a clone of some commodore monitor, but I'm not sure which one.

It accepts composite, and digital and analog RGB, The composite actually looks pretty good, and there's a button to enable a comb filter. A comb filter is basically a quick way to clean up the composite signal, thus improving the composite signal a little bit. You can tell when you click it, it does work. Now, it's not going to look anywhere near as amazing as RGB, but it's still neat.

For RGB in on this monitor there is a unique commodore style plug, so if you have the setup for that, it's still available, but I added BNC connectors for my own setup, and I think that will make it more user friendly for most peoples' setups also. Or maybe you want the bnc connectors removed, and I could do that too.

Now, it does accept Red, Green, Blue and H and V sync, but I tried sending a setup with just composite sync and that does work too, which is great! It actually worked/synced if I sent composite sync to either or of the Horizontal or Vertical sync bnc's connectors.

There are even the main geometry adjustments accessible around the back of the monitor, and you can just adjust it with your fingers. H size and center and v size and center, which is super super convenient to make adjustments on the fly.

So, once again, overall this is just an awesome monitor. Especially for the time, I don't see a year on it, but I'm sure it came out in the early 80's. Oh, and it has the door on the front, which is also especially rare to find on these early commodore'esque monitors!

I'm definitely going to be playing this one a lot, and might even decide on keeping it.
