13" GE RGB Modded & Tube Swap
13" GE RGB Modded & Tube Swap
Here's a one of kind tv! What makes this set unique is that I found a tube from an 80's set that had no tint at all on it. You may not know, but tv tubes have a range of light to dark tint on them. JVC tubes are typically darker tint, and the commodore tubes are very light tint. The tint is said to help contrast, and allow black colors to look even more black.
So, what happens when you find a tube that has no tint at all like this one!? The colors look insanely vibrant! Sure the contrast of the blacks isn't as much there, but you'll never see the colors pop like they do on this set, on any other.
I've always loved how the colors look so vibrant on non tinted tubes, so it was a dream of mine to see what rgb looks like on one, and here we go! It's glorious!
This tv was originally RF only, so not only did I add the RGB input, but I also added an rca connector for audio in.
It's also worth noting that this tv has virtually no bloom. The power regulation GE/RCA uses must be better than average.
I found a non tinted Hitachi tube from an old 80's set, and what makes this set look even cooler is that the tv is white. So the white enclosure, with the non tinted white looking tube is just so cool! I tried to show it off next to a darker tinted jvc in one of the pictures if you scroll through.
When you tube swap, the yoke that's on the tube you swap in doesn't always work so you need to swap the old yoke onto the new tube sometimes, and that's what I had to do here. When you do that it can be very challenging, almost impossible to get the convergence perfect. The convergence is great, but it's not perfect, I tried to take some photos where it's not perfect.
I was trying a new style of RGB connectors on this one, so we do have some bnc connectors hanging off the back. I just wanted to try a something new, where it doesn't take up a lot of space on the enclosure. It works just fine, and will hold up over time no problem, but I will likely go back to enclosure mounted bnc connectors.
